Floating Offshore Solar FEED Study and Concept Design

Blackfish completed a concept design and FEED study for an offshore floating solar installation, covering platform configuration, panel selection and mooring strategy. The study gave the client a practical route toward commercial deployment.

Blackfish completed a concept design and Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study for an offshore floating solar installation, supporting the development of scalable renewable energy infrastructure in marine environments.

The client required a technically viable and commercially attractive offshore floating solar concept capable of operating in challenging marine conditions. Early-stage decisions were needed around platform configuration, solar panel selection, mooring arrangements, manufacturing strategy and operational planning.

Blackfish conducted a market and landscape assessment of offshore floating solar technologies, reviewing platform concepts, photovoltaic panel options and deployment opportunities. The team developed FEED-level designs for both 0.6 MW and 1.2 MW floating solar platforms, undertaking concept generation and concept selection activities. Naval architecture assessments, mooring studies, solar yield calculations and concept-level structural assessments were completed to evaluate feasibility and performance. Manufacturing, assembly, access and maintenance strategies were also developed to support future deployment planning.

The study delivered a robust technical basis for advancing offshore floating solar development, providing the client with a clear concept design, engineering rationale and deployment strategy. The work established confidence in the proposed platform configurations and identified a practical route toward commercial implementation.

Challenge

The client needed a technically viable, commercially attractive offshore floating solar concept capable of operating in challenging marine conditions, with early decisions still open on platform configuration, panel selection, mooring and manufacturing strategy.

Approach

Blackfish assessed the offshore floating solar landscape before developing FEED-level designs for two different sizes of platform, running concept generation and selection activities. Tasks included naval architecture, mooring, solar yield and structural assessments to evaluate feasibility, alongside manufacturing, assembly and maintenance strategies for future deployment.

Outcome

The study delivered a robust technical basis for advancing offshore floating solar development, giving the client a clear concept design, engineering rationale and deployment strategy. It established confidence in the proposed platform configurations and a practical route toward commercial implementation.
